Bank of Thailand Pilot Retail CBDC

retail cbdc to the ostensible risk that cryptocurrencies present to conventional forms of finance, central banks all over the world have moved swiftly to take appropriate action.

As a direct consequence of this, central banks have begun investigating methods that will allow them to effectively satisfy the growing demand for digital assets by developing an asset that is pegged to fiat currencies.

As a result, the central bank digital currency, also known as the CBDC, came into existence as an answer to the preponderance of privately issued digital tokens.

According to reports, the Bank of Thailand (BOT) is on the verge of launching the CBDC’s pilot testing phase.

Thailand to Start CBDC Retail Pilot Test

The Bank of Thailand has been investigating the effects of retail CBDC on the country’s economy for more than four years now. It is working on testing the concept right now to determine whether or not it would be suitable for people to use in retail transactions in the country.

The future of finance will involve the use of digital technology in some capacity, and central banks are currently working toward the goal of ensuring that they retain some level of control over the creation and circulation of digital currencies.

Vachira Arromdee, the bank’s vice-governor, stated that the BOT is now concentrating on retail CBDC and its potential to stimulate economic growth. In addition, the bank noted that now is the ideal time to initiate the pilot phase for CBDC retail development.

The executive of the bank divulged the information that the pilot stage would determine the real-life applications of the retail CBDC. Nonetheless, the testing phase will involve a single private enterprise over a predetermined time frame.

In contrast to CBDC sold in retail stores, wholesale CBDC is intended exclusively for use by financial institutions in the context of interbank settlement and other wholesale transactions.

Retail CBDCs, on the other hand, are intended for day-to-day interactions with members of the general public. Similar to fiat currency, but in digital format.

Phases of the Pilot Examination

There are two distinct paths that can be taken during the pilot phase, which are described in the BOT statement as the “foundation” and “innovation” paths. Within the foundation tracks, there will be close to 10,000 users who have the potential to use retail CBDC as a payment method for goods and services. This phase will begin at the end of the current year and continue through 2023.

In the meantime, the innovative tracks will involve research on new financial services that are designed to fulfill the requirements of users. Additionally, during this stage, it will be determined whether or not the retail CBDC is suitable for the economy of Thailand as well as the goals that the BOT has set for digital payments.

Supporters of CBDC have repeatedly urged the government to expedite its development so as to prevent crypto assets from gaining an advantage.

With the rapid adoption of decentralized digital tokens, proponents of CBDC are emphasizing its use as a universal payment mechanism. In addition, supporters view the CBDC as the ideal deterrent against illicit financial transactions.

On the other hand, those who are opposed to the CBDC have voiced their disapproval of the asset’s centralized management. They want the government to focus on controlling physical currency rather than developing a digital payment system. In addition, according to them, the CBDC will make it impossible for individuals to maintain their privacy because the government will be responsible for issuing and keeping track of it.

On the other hand, digital assets, also known as CBDC, are unavoidable as the world continues to progress and authorities become more aware.
